Dr. Deborah German accomplished a daunting task in 2008: With an economy sagging and getting worse by the day, she raised $6.4 million to pay for UCF's first class of medical students. "She won over the hearts and wallets of Central Florida," said David Odahowski, CEO and chairman of the Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation. "She's put this medical school on the map."

German's will and drive to build a medical school from scratch earned her the 2008 Central Floridian of the Year, named by the Orlando Sentinel's Editorial Board.

Now in its 26th year, the designation recognizes the contributions of an individual or a group.
